A: It usually takes 7 days to have your pottery glazed and fired in our special on-site kiln. When you come into see us and do your painting, we will let you know what day and time you can collect your piece. ** PLEASE BRING YOUR COLLECTION TICKET WITH YOU WHEN YOU COME TO COLLECT ** NOTE: We do not phone customers individually to let them know when pottery is ready. It will be ready on the date discussed.
Q: Can you post the finished pieces out?
A: If you are unable to come back to collect we can post your pieces out. We always recommend collecting in person to avoid breakages in transit. All pieces posted out are done so at your own risk (although we do pack them very carefully.) Costs for posting out items available on quotation depending on size and weight.
Q: How much does it cost to paint my own pottery?
A: At Fired Frog Pottery Cafe there is a sitting fee of just £3 per person for a two-hour painting session. This includes the paints, glazes, use of tools and firing your pieces in the kiln. Each item you choose to paint is then priced individually. Prices range from £7 for small items to around £10-12 for medium sized items such as mugs and small plates to large platters for around £40. We aim to have something for all budgets.
Q: Do I need to book?
A: Where possible we recommend that you book a painting slot either online (click the Book Now button above) or via the phone to make sure that you have a seat. We always welcome drop-ins though and will accomodate anyone wanting to paint where possible. However we always recommend booking a slot during busy times such as Saturdays and half-term holidays or during special occasions such as Christmas and Halloween when the studio can get busy.
Q: Can I only paint one item in the two-hour session?
A: You can paint as many items as you like in your two hour session.
Q: Are the paints safe for children and babies?
A: We have babies and children in our studio all the time so all our paints are safe for them to use. The paints you will use are water-based so wash out of clothes easily and are non-toxic.
Q: I am 'not very creative' - can you help me?
A: Absolutely! We love having people in the studio that say they 'can't draw' or 'aren't very creative'. We have loads of ideas, stencils, stamps, templates, screenprinting and special techniques that we can show you to paint your items. There's no need to be a Picasso in our studio - simply an open mind and a willingness to have a try. Don't forget that our friendly studio staff will guide you through how it all works when you first come in as well. Please ask us loads of questions - we are here to help!
Q: Is pottery painting just for children?
A: Nope, nope and nope. Adults are very much encouraged to come into our studio to create their own special pottery pieces. We even have adult-only sessions on Thursday evenings where you can come along and have a go as well as regular workshops aimed at adults. It is a great way to get creative and switch the mind off for a few hours.
Q: What happens if I don't finish my piece in the 2-hour session?
A: If you want to carry on painting for another 2 hours to finish your piece (and there is space available) you can simply stay for another 2 hours by paying a discounted £2 studio fee. Alternatively hold onto your piece and bring it back another day to finish, again for a discounted £2 fee.
Q: Can you help me with baby hand and footprints?
A: Yes, of course. It can be tricky to get a good hand or footprint from a baby as they have a habit of wriggling or closing up their hands! Most weekdays we have specially trained staff to give you 1-2-1 support. Baby hand and footprints make great presents and are a wonderful memento of your little one. Please mention on your booking whether you need help with this or a highchair as well.
Q: What happens if my piece goes wrong in the kiln?
A: Unfortunately due to the delicate nature of the process, sometimes things go wrong in the kiln. The gremlins get in and occasionally pieces can crack or there can be imperfections in the paints and glazes meaning that items can be unsafe to use for food. If this happens you can come back and paint another item for free and have a second go! Twice the fun!
Q: Do you hold parties at the pottery cafe?
A: Yes! We love a party and our first floor studio is just the space for this. This private space can be arrange to hold up to 20 people seated for a pottery painting or creative experience. Kids parties, hen parties, baby showers - we can do it all. See this page for more information on the parties that we run. Alternatively you can just hire the space and do your own thing.
Q: Can I put the finished pottery in the dishwasher?
A: Yes, it is safe to put the pottery into the dishwasher or microwave, but it may then have a shorter life span. Because of this, we recommend hand-washing at all times.
Q: Can I mix the paint?
Yes you can, but the colours change during firing, and once they’re mixed we can’t guarantee how they will come out, so you may get a surprise!
